With the feature, climbing up everywhere, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild has been an Open World Revolution.
- Link, the best mountaineer in the world
- Open world does not mean that you can go everywhere
- A world that wants to be explored in whole
- Not afraid of descent
We often talk about whether a game is good or bad. An important role in this discussion always play the features, more precisely the game mechanics. Sometimes a title offers so outstanding good features that they make any weak points and even have any impact on subsequent games - and thus not merely meant direct continuations. In order to appreciate these elements separately, we start a new article series. In every issue we introduce you to a feature that is something very special. The beginning also makes one of the best games of recent years: The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. This opened us an Open World in 2017 in which there are almost no limits.
Link, the best mountaineer in the world
The "The Legend of Zelda" series has already limited the years before to linear hose levels. There were always extensive areas to explore, be it the Hylian steppe in Ocarina of Time or the cloud sea in Skyward Sword. But such a big and above all almost from the beginning in all freely walk-in world as in Breath of the Wild it did not exist in the series before. The developer team around Producer Eiji Aonuma and Game Director Hidemaro Fujibayashi but has gone a step further. It was not just a spacious Map built, but also the freedom of movement for us players drastically increased.
In The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the wild you can climb up anywhere. Between you and your destination is a mountain range? Well, you can ride outside... or you just overcomes you in which you prove how well link the mountains can rise up. You will not follow as in a Horizon Zero Dawn a permanently predefined path. No matter how smooth a rock wall, link can climb it. The only limitation is your stamina. If the corresponding beam is emptied, it inevitably comes to the fall and that can, depending on how high you climbed you can already end.
At the beginning of the adventure, link is not yet able to achieve every mountain peak in this way. But the more shrines you master, the more signs of probation you collect with which you can increase both your maximum life energy and endurance. So sooner or later you will be able to do anywhere. This not only ensures a great reward for a great sense of reward because you reach places in the later game, which seemed to be unattainable before. It is also not so common for an open-world game, as you might think.
Open world does not mean that you can go everywhere
Developers always brag about how big the worlds they built are. How many times does anyone have something like this in the presentation of a new Open World Game as "Do you see the mountain behind? Then you can say"? But almost every open world has its clear limits - and thus we do not mean the card edges at this point. Sure, no game world is infinite, not even the by Minecraft. But what we mean are the non-eligible areas that are in the middle of the worlds.
We have already addressed Horizon Zero Dawn. How many mountains can you not climb in the PlayStation title of Guerrilla Games? In this regard, he is anything but a single case. Also in Red Dead Redemption 2 there are areas that are simply inaccessible. Or in Skyrim. Or in The Witcher 3. But not so in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.
A world that wants to be explored in whole
Why does this immense freedom of movement count among the best video game features of all time? Reason number 1: The term "Open World" has never been taken out as literally away from pure sandbox games like Minecraft. In Breath of the Wild, after completing the tutorial, you can really go everywhere, everything is open - you only have enough stamina. Within the game world, there are no limits - neither natural nor artificial.
Reason number 2: The feature is not just the self-purpose in the game. Just as the significantly smaller Piranha bytes also made in Elex in 2017, where the game world is designed so that it completely supports the exploration by jetpack, the team at Nintendo has taken care that there is something to discover everywhere. It's really worth exploring any square centimeter of Hyrule and trust it to climb high mountains. Often you will find boxes containing a weapon, a shield or ruby. Or she bums on the hiding place of a Krogs. And then The Legend of Zelda offers: Breath of the Wild as many other secrets. If you only stay on the ground, will not even find everything the game has to offer.
Not afraid of descent
On top of that, Breath of the Wild also takes you the fear that you do not come down from a high mountain while not carefully climbing down again. That would be time consuming and not very fun. Luckily, link is equipped with a paraglider that you can unpack in the air at any time to easily and safely reach the ground. He has now made it into some other games. In Dying Light 2 there is a paraglider and in the Horizon Forbidden West appearing this week means the pendant shield glider. Of course, the EH also strongly offered by Breath of the Wild-inspired title Genhin Impact and Immortals Fenyx Rising comparable (in both cases it's wings). Well, and just in those titles you can climb up anywhere.
Now these features are certainly not suitable for every game. If the main character in GTA 6 is due to smooth house walls without aids, we would raise more than just an eyebrow. But in game worlds, which are very imaginative anyway, realism does not matter. The freedom of movement, the Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, is welcome to hold in more playing this kind.
