Low sales figures for the game on the Wii U visible was really disappointing for Platinum Games.
Although it was not something that had expected many people, but the Kickstarter campaign for the Wonderful 101: Remastered, which will publish platinum games themselves, ran very well. It has continuously achieved stretch goals, while Platinum increases new targets with increasing financing.
This is of course surprising, because The wonderful 101 was considered a fairly serious commercial failure when it was published in 2013 for the first time on the Wii u, with the eccentric action title only a few thousand copies sold. Given the fact that Platinum has chosen a crowdfunding campaign for a remaster of the game, the decision is even strange. Why did they decide to go this way?
According to Spieller Hideki Kamiya, the decision was to remaster the game, motivated _ through his failure at the Wii U.
We first released The wonderful 101 2013 on Wii U and for a variety of reasons, it was not successful for us, said Kamiya in an interview with Nintendo Everything. [Studio boss Atsushi] Inaba and I have been complaining since then that not many players could experience the game.
Kamiya explained that Platinum Games and Nintendo - co-owners of IP discussions had led over the project and ultimately signed the project to finally bring it to life.
I'm not sure when we spoke for the first time to bring the game to new platforms, but we first had to advise you with Nintendo, Kamiya said. When we composed with them, we explained our situation: how the game was unsuccessful during publication and how we wanted to bring it to modern consoles.
I mean, it was really disappointing for us, you know? We worked so hard to develop this high quality game, and we had hoped that many players would play it, but that did not really work. As a result of our negotiations, the friendliness of Nintendo has enabled both the ports and this campaign.
The Wonderful 101: Remastered will appear on the Nintendo Switch, PS4 and the PC in April.
